Dutasteride (0.5 mg) and finasteride (5 mg) are small-molecule oral medications available in the United States from multiple generic drug manufacturers with a prescription.1-4
Pricing
Publicly available pharmacy websites list a range of prices for 5-ARIs with and without insurance. Discounted listings show finasteride (5 mg) priced at ~$6/month, with higher retail prices at ~$55/month.4,5 Dutasteride (0.5 mg) is priced at ~$8/month in discounted listings, with higher retail prices at ~$150/month.3,6 Actual costs can vary by pharmacy, location, insurance coverage, and use of discount programs.
Insurance coverage and formulary placement
Based on publicly available formulary information from several large Medicare Part D plans (e.g., United Healthcare, HealthPartners, Kaiser Permanente, Humana), dutasteride and finasteride appear on drug formularies and may be assigned to lower-cost tiers (Tier 1 or Tier 2), depending on plan-specific policies.7,8 Coverage, co-pays, and prior-authorization requirements vary by plan and may differ across regions.

†Finasteride is also available in a 1 mg formulation, which is FDA-approved for androgenic alopecia. 1 mg finasteride has not been studied in a randomized controlled trial or evaluated by the FDA for use in patients with prostate cancer.
